24th Annual

GUILDTOWN BLUEGRASS MUSIC FESTIVAL

July 30th — August 2nd, 2010  - Featuring top International bands

CRAIG DUNCAN & FRIENDS (USA)

STARS OF THE NASHVILLE BLUEGRASS MUSIC SCENE HEADLINE AT GUILDTOWN

Based in the “bluegrass country” region around Nashville, Tennessee, Craig Duncan & Friends present an entertaining program of traditional Tennessee and authentic bluegrass music for audiences of all ages.  The group, which features Duncan on fiddle and mandolin, Billy Smith and Kris Ballinger on guitars, Mark Barnett on banjo and Dale Ballinger on bass, is based on years of friendship and making music together in a variety of overlapping configurations.

Bandleader Craig Duncan, a member of the North American Fiddler’s Hall of Fame and Who’s Who in Music & Musicians, has been the featured instrumentalist on more than 70 albums with sales in excess of $5 million. His music has been heard on television shows like Malcolm in the Middle and The Oprah Winfrey Show, as well as on A&E, Biography, BET, PBS, History and other cable networks.  He is recognized internationally as the author of instructional books for Mel Bay Publications.

Singer/guitarist Billy Smith  carries the repertoire of most of the first generation bluegrass music pioneers around in his head and heart—the natural result of growing up onstage and performing with artists like the Father of Bluegrass Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, Lester Flatt and Jimmy Martin.  Billy’s mother, Hazel Smith is a well-known country music journalist and television cooking show host and his brother, Terry plays bass in the IBMA Entertainer of the Year band, The Grascals, but Billy himself is most known as an award-winning songwriter.

Smith’s compositions have been recorded by Bill Monroe, The Del McCoury Band, Dan Tyminski, The Osborne Brothers, The Lonesome River Band, IIIrd Tyme Out and The Lewis Family, among others—more than 80 cuts so far.  The hit song, “Hobo Blues,” recorded by The Lonesome River Band on their Carrying the Tradition album (named Bluegrass Album of the Year in 2001), was Smith’s first major cut.

Banjo player Mark Barnett has been a regular part of the Nashville music scene since 1974, and he’s been performing in various bands with Billy Smith and Craig Duncan for nearly as long.  Mark played 23 seasons at Opryland USA—most of the time leading his own show.  He has recorded a number of albums and is currently featured on two recordings on the Benson label.

Another seasoned musician who seems to innately know how to deliver a song and entertain a crowd, Mark has played music all over the United States, including a performance at the White House in Washington, D.C.  Overseas tours have taken Barnett’s music to fans in Canada, Europe and the Soviet Union.

Most fans will agree that a hard-driving five string banjo is the heartbeat of bluegrass music, and Mark Barnett knows how to deliver the complexly syncopated, breath-taking instrumental sound that epitomizes the genre.  You’ve got to have a banjo to play traditional bluegrass, and Mark Barnett is one of the best. He’s also a gifted singer.

Kris and Dale Ballinger
are a husband and wife team well known in the Nashville music community as members of The Cluster Pluckers, a band formed by chance in 1980 at a local picking party.  They are fine singers (they could probably sing harmony to a fence post!).

Music lovers couldn’t ask for a better representation of bluegrass music than what Craig Duncan & Friends deliver.  Their experience and expertise, combined with a genuine love for the type of traditional music they play, brings audiences to their feet with rousing waves of applause.

Background to the Festival: The festival is held in the idyllic village of Guildtown in rural Perthshire – Logo By Dave Boylethe scenic heartland of Scotland, six miles from the historic city of Perth - an ancient Roman settlement named Bertha, and early Scottish capital known then as St John’s Toun, where the Kings of Scotland were crowned at Scone Palace. The whole area is a haven for visitors catering for every aspect of tourism including  all aspects of History, Whisky, Golf, Music & Poetry. Late summer, when the festival is held, is renowned for good harvest time weather. Edinburgh the nation’s capital, and seat of the new Scottish Parliament, lies 40 miles to the south and at that time of year the capital with its famed castle, is vibrant on the run up to its Festival of Arts.

Festival Site & Facilities: Guildtown Bluegrass festival is hosted in the Village Hall and is sponsored by The Anglers Inn & Restaurant – the delightful and hospitable village Pub and top class restaurant. Festival attendees camp on the village green and enjoy the facilities in the village hall, which includes washing, cooking and toilet facilities. The City of Perth has every possible facility including tourist accommodation and information. www.visitscotland.com

The festival is famed for its informal, friendly and exciting atmosphere. It incorporates great music, both in concerts and in informal sessions; good ale  and great food at the Anglers Inn & Restaurant with its great Scottish hospitality, and the wonderful location in the Scottish heartland.

John Sheldon founded the festival in 1987 with the support of Bluegrass aficionados. Its successful principles are those of a non-profit making team effort by the SBA committee. It is a showcase and focus for Bluegrass in Scotland and welcomes European and overseas visitors for a relaxing and exciting Bluegrass experience.

Each year the festival welcomes a small but growing number to a very special event. The festival has been likened to attending a reunion with lifelong friends and featuring the renowned atmosphere of the ‘kerosene circuit’ of early Bluegrass pioneering days.

We would love to welcome you to our national Bluegrass festival at the invitation of the Scottish Bluegrass Association. The success of Guildtown over the years proves beyond doubt that Bluegrass has made the long journey home and, that as Bill Monroe requested to the organisers, the Celtic connections and roots are secure and growing.

The 7th Annual Cornish Bluegrass Festival

17th – 19th September 2010.

We are delighted to be holding our Bluegrass Festival at the multi-award winning Hendra Holiday Park, Newquay, Cornwall, once again this year. With fantastic amenities to suit the whole family, Hendra offers the ideal setting for a Bluegrass Festival.

We will again be using Hendra’s fantastic 500 seated Cabaret room and by adding an 80 x 30 foot heated performance marquee, we hope to ensure that everyone will get the chance to see their favorite bands.

Headlining acts this year include, Amy Gallatin and Stillwater, Brother Mule, Beverley Smith and Carl Jones plus Jack Lawrence with Richard Plank. From France we welcome Blue Railroad Train. Top UK bands include, ‘Andsome and Some’, Dalebilly, Davis, Locker & Winquist, Doghouse Central, Home Territory, Papa Truck, Roots and Galoots, the Scoville Units, Thunderbridge Bluegrass Boys and local new young band Flats and Sharps.

As is our custom, we will be holding a wide variety of instrument and singing workshops, plus Appalachian and Flat-footing Dancing exhibitions and workshops with Sibs Riesen, Kickin’ Chicken and ‘Appal Pie’, throughout the weekend.

We will be continuing our “tradition” of holding the amazing Gospel session on Sunday morning, this year the session will be hosted by Beverley Smith and Carl Jones with Jock Tyldsley and Vera Van Heeringen. Following on from the Gospel session will be a ‘Slow band Jam’ run by ‘Garry Payne and friends’. The “pig roast” will be there to help the morning along.

Sim Daley, one of the worlds foremost instrument makers will be making a welcome return, not only selling his mandolins, but also to give us the benefit of his vast knowledge by providing a mandolin, guitar and banjo set-up and repair service.

Being mindful of the current economic situation, cost of fuel and the distances some people travel to be with us, we have over the past four years kept the ticket prices down. Unfortunately, however, we have had to increase the ticket prices to £40.00 for a full weekend adult ticket, this year.

We believe that £40.00 for a Bluegrass weekend in sunny Cornwall is worth every penny and is also extremely competitive with other festivals in the country. After all, who else offers five star award winning shower and toilet facilities with their pitch plus an indoor heated wave pool?

Nashville, TNTwenty thousand fans and music industry professionals from around the globe will converge on the Nashville Convention Center from September 27 through October 3 for the International Bluegrass Music Association's (IBMA) World of Bluegrass.  The week is equal parts homecoming, family reunion, expo, business conference, celebration and music festival, highlighted by the International Bluegrass Music Awards which honor the year's most outstanding talent.
To view a brief video about the unique World of Bluegrass experience, click here  http://e2ma.net/go/8421160054/2923904/96180585/300/goto:http://www.ibma.org/events.programs/wob/index.asp

The theme for World of Bluegrass 2010 is Face TimeIt Matters, because these seven daysmore than any other week or place on the planetare about the relationships folks who care about and work in the business of bluegrass music build and keep for a lifetime. IBMA events are where artists, DJs, journalists, talent buyers and fans interact and share new music. Its where merchandisers and luthiers unveil new products and instruments, as well as meet artists who will endorse their products. In fact, it's where everyone in the industry meets to sharpen and share their professional skills.
Consider the following benefits waiting at World of Bluegrass 2010:
Face-to-Face meetings build trust and relationships.
Education is more effective in a live setting.
Live meetings actually save time and money.
Live meetings facilitate problem solving through a more effective exchange of ideas.
Face-to-Face meetings provide the human connection that powers business.
Legendary mandolinist and band leader Sam Bush will deliver the keynote address for World of Bluegrass 2010. The 100th birthday of Bill Monroe, widely recognized as the father of bluegrass music, is just around the corner, on September 13, 2011. Bush will talk about what that milestone means to the bluegrass music community and industryand how we might best celebrate a century of Monroes influence on the planet.

"Music" remains the first word in "music business" during the conference, with more than 300 showcase performances expected. It's the best place to introduce new acts, new songs and new recordings and connect with key decision makers for bookings, media, broadcast and distribution. Showcases from The Boxcars, Brand New Strings, The Chapmans, Cherryholmes, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, the Cockman Family, Rodney Dillard, the Downtown Ramblers, The John Hartford Stringband, The Infamous Stringdusters, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, the Claire Lynch Band, Kati Penn & NewTown, Lou Reid & Carolina, the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band, The Snyder Family Band, Summertown Road, Wayne Taylor & Appaloosa and The Darrell Webb Band will be highlighted during the week, in addition to scores of privately-hosted shows.
Thirty seminars and educational labs will provide a spirited forum on topics ranging from How to be a Better Broadcaster and Developing a Business Plan, to Using Video to Expand your Business, a Website Critique, Branding & Marketing, Parenting Talented Bluegrass Kids, Web & Catalog Marketing and more.

The 21st anniversary of the International Bluegrass Music Awards is the high point of the week, when the music comes home to the historical Ryman Auditorium on Thursday evening, Sept. 30. While the best seats are among the celebrities in the hallowed pews of the Ryman for the all-star lineup, the show is also broadcast live on Sirius/XM and around the world via a syndicated radio network.  According to show co-producers Cindy Baucom and Trisha Tubbs, "You dont want to miss the 2010 IBMA Awards Show!  Its going to be a one-of-a-kind experienceall about amazing music, reunion moments, special guests and performances that will create lasting memories.

The weekend (Oct. 1-3) arrives on a "high lonesome" note with the uniquely exciting Bluegrass Fan Fest, sponsored in part by Martha White Foods, Martin Guitars and Knee Deep in Bluegrass. Inside the comfortable setting of the Nashville Convention Center, fans will enjoy music from more than 60 acts on three stages, including the Main Stage, the Masters Workshop Stage and the Grand Master Fiddler Championship.  A 100-booth expo center is the place to browse and buy the latest music gear, publications, recordings and merchandisewhile also meeting artists at their booths in between performances.

Featured acts confirmed at press time include the award-winning talents of Dailey & Vincent, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Michael Cleveland & Flame Keeper, Dale Ann Bradley, Tony Rice, The SteelDrivers, Cherryholmes, Lonesome River Band, The Isaacs, Danny Paisley & Southern Grass, Josh Williams Band, Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, The Boxcars, The Claire Lynch Band, Chris Jones & The Night Drivers, Grasstowne, G-2 and Barry Scott & Second Wind. Additional acts will be announced throughout the summer.
Returning to the festival is the popular Fan Feast breakfast on Friday morning, Oct. 1.  For only $25, fans can enjoy breakfast served by the biggest stars in bluegrass.
Proceeds from Fan Fest ticket sales benefit the Bluegrass Trust Fund, established to help bluegrass professionals during times of emergency need, as well as support IBMA's marketing and educational events to promote the music year-round. Kamp Update
Let me say that this past June's 2010 Kamp Series was definately the Best Year Ever. More classes, more jamming, more friends and students and as always the highest level of instruction for acoustic instruments that you can find in one place at one time, anywhere on the planet.  Thanks to all who participated. Special thanks to Harry Moore, Bob Comeau and Seth Naugler for their donations to the Scholarship funds. Also thanks to Dick Daniels, Tommy Jordan, Mario Proulx, Jim Grainger, Richard Starkey, Ken and Virginia Miller and all the folks that helped out teaching and repairing instruments.

This was our first year using the new Clayton Center for the Arts and it was magnificent. Stacy, Teresa and Cindy ran the sound again and as always did a super job. It was quite an adjustment to what we had been used to for concerts. The first eleven years using the dilapidated Wilson Theater complex then moving up to the Alumni Gym for three years. Now we may have found our home in the CCA building. We'll see.... there is still something special about concerts in a gym.

The incredible 2011 instructor line-up is now posted at www.acoustic-kamp.com along with some (but not all) of the great changes to occur in 2011. Take time and take a look. You can also register now for the great Kamp of 2011.

Make plans now to be a part of the 2011 Steve Kaufman's Acoustic Kamp
Remember: You don't have to be good at your instrument to come to Kamp. You just have to want to get better.

We are stocking the Latest Intellitouch Tuner.
The Mighty Midget PT-10

Two of the greatest features of this new tuner is the back lighting. They are Red as the needle approaches the correct tuning but one it reaches being "In Tune" the back lighting turns Green. You don't even have to watch the needle. Just turn the tuning key until it changes from Red to Green. Also it hears and accurately tunes the Low E on Guitar. No more waiting. No more chiming the Low E to get the tuner to recognize the low note. Just hit it once - plink- and you are ready to tune it. No hassles.

Bluegrass Guitar Solos That Every Parking Lot Picker Should Know

This is by far my most comprehensive, instructional project. This unique six CD course has been produced for all levels of players: Steve teaches the melody to familiarize the beginning guitarist with the tune in it's most basic form; then he gets the intermediate guitarist started on a series of licks and runs with the intermediate version of the same tune. The advanced version will spice up the tune and make it a real show piece.
There are six to the series. They are not progresively more difficult. They just have MORE SONGS!
Volumes 1, 2 and 4 are picking tunes. Volume 3 is Bluegrass Vocal picking arrangements. Volume 5 is Swing tunes and Volume 6 is Gospel tunes.
There is also a sister series for the Mandolin with Volumes 1 and 2.

CD Review

The Coleman Brothers and the Lone Star Boys – “Second Time Around”

10 cuts - 27 min: 39 sec.

Song List (Original in bold):  Gonna Paint the Town; Old, Old House; Blue Grass Twist; Lovin’ You Too Well; My Deceitful Heart; Carli’s Fancy; Sweet Thing; I Don’t Know What To Do; Somehow You Wouldn’t Let Me Love You; In Despair.

Ten traditional bluegrass songs on a CD is just what the doctor ordered for any fans craving a taste of the Monroe or Stanley Brothers. The Coleman Brothers, Craig and Corey, punch out the harmony only siblings can create.

The harmony is especially fine on “Gonna Paint the Town”, “My Deceitful Heart”, and “I Don’t Know What To Do”.  “Sweet Thing” with a single guitar is an excellent song, and the harmony vocals come through perfectly. When Craig Coleman goes into his falsetto voice to create the Monroe sound on “I Don’t Know What To Do” goose bumps are certain.  Harmony singing is perfect on all the vocals and the vocals are perfectly understood, never over shadowed by instrumentation, for the makings of a fine CD.

Especially notable is the banjo playing of Lone Star teenager, Bryan Hollifield. He adds the Stanley, Scruggs or Reno licks necessary to make the song sound as it should. On “Blue Grass Twist” he does the double noting with all the sounds of Don Reno.  Craig Coleman plays the mandolin reminiscent of Monroe.

Other Lone Star Band members include, Jay Hollifield, who provides a solid bass and takes a nice break when playing “Blue Grass Twist”. Corey Coleman provides some nice fiddle backup and Pat Stowers plays the West Texas traditional rhythm, adding some fine G-runs in just the right places.

Not only can these Coleman Brothers sing, they can also write songs.  “Carli’s Fancy”, an instrumental, will stand in any bluegrass circle.

Excellent vocals with harmony, an original tune, very fine instrumentation, and a near perfect mix with plenty of bass makes this CD a must have for the traditionalist.  Bill Monroe sat up and took notice of these boys once. If he was around he would be very proud and the first to admit that these boys were doing it right, the “Second Time Around”.

BANJO ROOTS NETWORK    www.myspace.com/banjoroots

This site is the first of the Banjo Roots Network, a 'work-in-progress' being created and hosted by Shlomo Pestcoe and Greg C. Adams. It is a projected series of related sites on MySpace that will explore the many different aspects of the history of the banjo, its Afro-Creole origins in the Caribbean in the 17th century, and its deep roots in the West African family of plucked lutes.

The principal objective of the Banjo Roots Network is to be a platform for public outreach and education through which they can share the latest findings of recent banjo roots research. Likewise, they hope that it will also serve as a springboard for dialogue and collaboration between researchers within the banjo community as well as scholars working in different, but related disciplines.

DECORATION DAY IN THE MOUNTAINS:
Traditions of Cemetery Decoration in the Southern Appalachians
by Alan Jabbour and Karen Singer Jabbour
Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2010

Decoration Day is a late spring or summer tradition that involves cleaning community cemeteries, decorating them with flowers, holding a religious service in the cemetery, and having dinner on the ground. These commemorations seem to predate the post-Civil War celebrations that ultimately gave us our national Memorial Day. Little has been written about
this tradition, but it is still practiced widely throughout the Upland South, from North Carolina to the Ozarks and beyond.

Written by folklorist Alan Jabbour and illustrated with more than a hundred photographs taken by his wife, Karen Singer Jabbour, Decoration Day in the Mountains is an in-depth exploration of this little-known cultural tradition. Through interviews, first-hand narrative, photographs, and extensive field and library research, the authors illuminate the meanings behind the rituals. The book describes typical decoration events, surveys the folk cemeteries in which Decoration Day takes place, and explores the symbolic meaning and social significance of the custom in the region’s rural communities.

Decoration Day in the Mountains also shows how the tradition led to a grassroots movement to hold the federal government to its promises about cemeteries left behind when families were removed to make way for Fontana Dam and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Jabbours document this movement, which has had a significant impact on the political and cultural life of western North Carolina.

Abundantly illustrated and vividly written, Decoration Day in the Mountains presents a compelling account of a widespread and longstanding Southern cultural practice

Larry Hanks' Summer 2010 UK "Boll Weevil" Tour begins on Tuesday, 15 June. There'a a large number of changes since I listed it before so here it is afresh:

Larry Hanks has made his living singing and playing traditional songs of the American West, Cowboy and Miner’s songs; including many songs in tribute to the working man, the music of Utah Phillips, Sam Hinton, and Malvina Reynolds.  He is known for his deep, resonant bass voice, sparse and tasteful guitar playing, accomplished Jew’s Harpery, and careful selection of meaningful repertoire.

He has performerd with Jody Stecher, John Wright and Gordon Bok, and was one of the Sweets Mill String Band (with Kenny Hall).  He was also a one-time member of the Fat City Stringband, predecessor of the Highwoods Stringband, about 1970.

As mentioned previously, Tony Thomas will be giving  workshops at the Sweet Sunny South festival (Hastings 10th-12th Sept).

One is expected to be about Gus Cannon, five string banjo playing and the Blues.  This would feature explaining how African American five string banjoists confronted the development of the Blues in general as well as approaches to play the blues on a five string banjo for today but also focusing on the playing that Gus Cannon did in his 1927-1930 recordings.

The other is expected to  be a presentation on African American traditional banjo playing in history, discussing a few of the players and general approaches involved in the style and demonstrating a few approaches to playing.  It is hoped to include unissued field recordings and (technology permitting) video of several of the traditional players.

There are now photos and video from the Allison Williams & Chance McCoy gig at Grove Ferry in Kent :

Lois Ann Olmstead lives in east London (E1) and would be really grateful for a lift to Summer Camp with her 7 year old son. She is flexible about the number of days to be there and could make her way to another part of London if that is easier. If you can help, please contact her direct - lolmstead@gmail.com

From Graham Anstee:

I have created a Yahoo chat group simply called foaotmad_chat, please could you include details in the mailout.

This group like many others with Yahoo provides free email contact with members of the group, the ability to upload files, photos, links messages etc.

This is the description of the group
Discussion group for staying in touch with FOAOTMAD members, promoting and listing American old time music / tunes, preferred keys for playing in sessions. Uploading music notation / tab, private recordings and listing reference to recorded material and source etc. This group is specifically for members of Friends of American Old time Music and Dance (FOAOTMAD). The group will provide an email chat forum for various old time music events, views and for sharing old time music.

The Group can be found by typing foaotmad_chat into the Yahoo groups search box on a Yahoo home page.  Things seem to work better if you have a Yahoo account / email.
Go to the groups foaotmad_chat page and join the group.  If FOAOTMAD membership numbers are provided with the introduction email I will be able to keep out spammers.  All members of the group will be able to upload or download material and it will be totally interactive.

Both volumes of the long out of print Old-Time Fiddler’s Repertory by R.P. Christeson are now available in paperback from the University of Missouri Press

U.S. purchasers can use the links, the rest of us will have to use Amazon (when the re-issue gets to us!).

And if you are interested in Missouri tunes, there's a great double cd of Bob Walters (mainly from the recordings of Dwight Lamb) recently available:

and from the same source:

...now available from Missouri Valley Musice "Old Time Fiddle Classics" featuring Dwight Lamb on fiddle and Elvin Campbell guitar. This cd is a reissue of an LP recorded in 1967 called "Old Time Fiddlin Left Hand Style" and "Old Time Fiddlin Left Hand Style" volume 2 which was recorded in 1972. A total of 34 tracks of tunes in the Missouri Valley
Style including   Purcell's, Pacific Slope, Five Miles Out of Town, Steamboat Round the Bend and many more.

Tony Thomas will be in the UK in September on vacation.  He will be in London and in Mistley, around 11 miles northeast of Colchester. He will be at the Sweet Sunny South festival.

He is an African American banjoist who helped organize the 2005 Black Banjo Gathering and the recent celebration of it.  He is an historian of the five-string banjo and African American playing of it with chapters forthcoming in scholarly collections from Duke University Press and University of Illinois Press.  I have given several presentations on banjo history at the annual US banjo collectors gatherings.

He plays old time African American and European banjo both down picking and finger picking.

While banjo playing and performance is NOT the purpose of this trip, he will have his banjo with him and would love to get together with any banjoists or attending any nearby old time or banjo collector events while I am there.

He will be on the continent, visiting Sweden and Russia, but based on the Mosel in Germany between August 12 and October 18.

Email him at writerrad@aol.com if you want to get together or know of events he might want to check out.

THUNDER FLASH

Hey! It's summer! Glastonbury has been and gone, and the expectations of the nation now are passed limply from the England team to little ol' Andy Murray, who's Scottish. So all eyes on Centre Court if you want to feel at all patriotic!!!

BUT.....amongst all the sadness of our sporting under-achievement, and the glee of finally getting into a warm bath after week of portaloos and sweat at Worthy Farm, we are pleased to tell you that Thunderbridge are still here, doing the business that they set out to do all those years ago..........
 July gigs:
Wednesday 21st July: Rock Dough Session # 7! Yes! It is with great pleasure to annouce another set of sessions here. After re-negotiating our contracts to now include copious amounts of Bud Black, big bowls full of olives (without the stones) and a tray full of extra hot chilli and calzone, we'll be at the lovely Wellington eatery for another few months, every third Wednesday, sometimes with guests, sometimes on our own. Tell your friends and do come along!!!!

So, that's a July list for you - we're getting ever-closer to the festivals in September, and this year its Didmarton and Newquay. Try to get to them, as they're full of great, great music and good beer!
 Have a cracking summer
Jules (freshly showered), Brian (busy at work), Martin (hot and busy at work) and Nick (between jobs. Yippee!)

WHAT KEN'S BEEN UP TO:

The Prince Edward Island Traditional Fiddling Website. My detail work on the PEI Fiddling Website (writing, music editing, selecting audio and video snippets, etc.) is now completed. The Canadian Museum of Civilization is now in the process of designing how the website will operate, and deciding upon its general appearance. One major project involved is that according to Canadian law all English-language speech and text must be translated into French. No set date has been projected for launch, but I imagine it will be up and running within a year.

The website now has a name, "Bowing Down Home: Traditional Fiddling on Prince Edward Island."

I continue running four music camps: Suwannee Banjo Camp, Midwest Banjo Camp, Northeast Heritage Music Camp, and American Music Camp (for links, see below). Registrations for the Suwannee and and Midwest Banjo Camps were back at pre-recession levels. NHMC was down a little from last year, but we figure this is due to several new music camps opening up in the region.

THIS SUMMER

I'm taking July off. In early August, Alan Jabbour and I will be working in Goderich, Ontario. We'll teach at the Celtic College (essentially a music camp) from Aug 3-6, and play at the Celtic Roots Festival from Aug 6-8. Then in early September I'll be running the American Banjo Camp in Nordland, Washington near Seattle (see below).

PROJECTED FOR FALL AND WINTER

Fiddler Alan Jabbour and I are planning a tour in late Oct-early Nov that will cover parts of the midwest and upper South. We're also thinking of a Southern tour in late Winter. Check my website for details as they emerge.

HELP FILL IN OPEN DATES

If you live in a region where I'm projecting a tour and you would like to have me do a concert and/or workshop in your town, do contact me. I am open to doing house concerts and other small events on days when I am otherwise unscheduled.

Dear Friends,

As usual, the months are flying by. June was crammed with a lot of good music and what stands out most was playing in several small communities in some outstanding theaters. It's inspiring when we go somewhere and see that the townspeople, rather than tear it down, have decided to renovate an old theater and bring it back to life. It's no easy task raising the kind of money that's needed for such an endeavor and it's so encouraging to realize how much the arts mean to people. So here's to all the folks in Heyward, Ironwood, Crystal Falls and Mountain City who have decided to pay the price to bring the light to their communities.

STONEWALL COUNTRY:

In 1985 we, along with Don Baker, developed and wrote a musical for the Lime Kiln Theater in Lexington, VA on the life and times of Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson, the legendary Confederate general. After being away from the piece for many years, last year we did it again and came away from the experience with a newfound respect for what we did all those many years ago. The audience response made us realize that "Stonewall Country" is not something we should take lightly. And so we're doing it again this year. Rehearsals are hot and sweaty but they are fun. We're thrilled to be back with some of the original cast members and are excited to see our words and music coming back to life on stage. We're running two weekends this year. Information for tickets can be found at http://www.theateratlimekiln.com.

FORTUNE WILLIAMS MUSIC FESTIVAL:

Plans for the eighth annual Fortune Williams Music Festival are in place and tickets will go on sale to the general public on July 19. As we've done in years past, we'll allow you folks on our email list - and those on Jimmy Fortune's list - first dibs at tickets a week ahead starting on July 12. You will have to use the pre-sale code FWPS2010 to order the week of July 12-16. You may go by the Frontier Culture Museum or call them at

(540) 332-7850. Because they get many calls on the first day you will probably have to leave your name and number so they can call you back. All calls are returned in the order the message is received. Office hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information about the festival go to www.fortunewilliamsmusicfestival.org.

AUGUSTA HERITAGE BLUEGRASS WEEK:

We're looking forward to being in Elkins, WV the first week in August teaching harmony for Bluegrass week at the Augusta Heritage Center. There are so many great singers in Bluegrass music that we consider it an honor to be asked. Now, in every free moment that we have, we're thinking hard on what it is we know about singing and harmony and how best to explain it. We're so glad they asked us because we're enjoying this process of how to teach what it is we've learned over 37 years of singing for a living. An extra added attraction for us is the list of other teachers we'll be with that week. It's a who's who of Bluegrass performers. It's going to be more fun than folks our age should have. Go to http://www.augustaheritage.com/bluegrass.html just to see what we mean.

GARRISON KEILLOR'S "THE SUMMER LOVE TOUR:

We traveled to Spokane,WA for the June 12 "A Prairie Home Companion" show and the next week got a call asking us to join the troupe for the last five dates of their "The Summer Love Tour." We were surprised and really pleased to be asked and so glad we had the dates open. And, as it turns out, we're going to end up close to home. Info can be had at http://prairiehome.publicradio.org/tickets/.

FATHERS DAY

On Fathers Day we thought of our fathers, both of whom have passed on, and remembered fondly one of Robin's fathers favorite quotes. He was a Presbyterian minister and knew of which he spoke when he said:

"The secret of a good sermon is to have a good beginning and a good ending; and to have the two as close together as possible."

Hope this finds you well and that we see you at one of the stops along the way.

Your pals, Robin and Linda
